Landscape Notes is a forum for sharing information and insights about parks, gardens and the public realm.

The site provides observations and information about landscapes in the Boston metropolitan area, where I live and work, as well as places explored through travel and participation in international cultural landscape initiatives. It is informed by my experiences working as a landscape architect, urban planner, landscape historian and writer.

Book reviews, op-eds, essays and feature-style pieces about parks, gardens and the public realm including streetscapes, plazas, markets, and urban forests will be included, with a focus on green infrastructure and contemporary issues. Unless noted, I will only write about places I have visited and use my own images.

Why Landscape Notes? For me, a note contains an idea that can be explored further, encouraging inquiry. I hope that by reading about the places and ideas that interest me, your curiosity will be piqued and that you will think about and experience landscapes in a new way.

I so thoroughly enjoyed reading the most recent posts and will be returning to complete reading the rest of them. I have been able to glean several ideas for my own garden. I haven’t been to Lake Maggiore itself for several years but have spent a good deal of time in Lugano in the recent past where my daughter attended college. You live in a very beautiful part of the world which I hope to visit again soon.
